It appeared from the evidence that the prisoner, along with two small boys, had taken a barrow from a shop door and gone to the Albert Edward Dock and stolen the wood, taking it round on the barrow and selling it ... Mr Priestman School Board Inspector said that he had had the boy under him before, and he thought he had a weak intellect. he had been examined by Dr Martin but had not had his report yet"...The Shields Daily News for 1 September 1905 reports:.."Charles Marr (14), 24 Camden Street, Alexander Stephenson (14), 6 Middle Street and Joseph Stein (9), 10 North Street, Milburn Place, were remanded until Monday morning for being found begging from foot passengers on the Grand Parade at 4.30 yesterday afternoon"...These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1)...This set contains mugshots of boys and girls under the age of 21. A mug shot or mugshot is a photographic portrait of a person from the waist up, typically taken after a person is arrested made with a purpose to have a photographic record for identification purposes by victims, the public and investigators. A typical mug shot is two-part, with one side-view, and one front-view. The paired arrangement may have been inspired by the 1865 prison portraits taken by Alexander Gardner of accused conspirators in the Lincoln assassination trial, though Gardner's photographs were full-body portraits with only the heads turned for the profile shots. The earliest mugshot photos of prisoners may have been taken in Belgium in 1843 and 1844. In the UK, the police of London started taking mugshots in 1846. By 1857, the New York City Police Department had a gallery where daguerreotypes of criminals were displayed.
