TILBURY FORT-WJND AGAINST TIDE.From a Painting by Clarlisoii St an fie Id, R.A, ^^ T A N FI E L D. 45 In 1836 he exhibited his large picture of the Battle of Trafalgar,painted for the Senior United Service Club. This is generally allowed to behis masterpiece; the original sketch was purchased by the late Mr. Vernon,and now belongs to the nation. We pass over the succeeding two years of Stanfields life—although theywere productive of several admirable works—simply because of our limitedspace : in 1839 he was absent abroad ; but in 1840 there hung on the wallsof the Academy six pictures from his pencil, all of them Italian or Frenchlandscapes of a high order of merit. Stanfield was a most prolific painter; for years after the date we havereached he continued to contribute on the average four or five picturesannually to the Academy.
