Born in 1854, Gabriel Biessy, after a stint in Bordeaux, began at the School of Fine Arts in Lyon as a student of Félix Clément before entering the studio of Carolus Duran and Luc-Olivier Merson in Paris in 1879. He sent his first portraits to the Salon in 1882 and then undertook a series of trips to Holland, Portugal, Senegal and Egypt. He mainly painted portraits, views of Paris or genre scenes, representing the life of his time.
