Balfour Ker - Untitled (couple on train track)
Summary
A painting that appeared in the July 1912 Woman's Home Companion for a contest inviting readers to give it a title. At the time, the contest was the magazine's most popular, with over 25,000 entries from around the United States, and from as far away as the Philippines. The winning titles were announced in the January 1913 issue. The first prize entry, "Union Pacific," was suggested by J. O. M. Van Tassel of New York, winning $50. Runners-up included "Delayed by a Coupling" (3rd prize, $15) and two verses:
I've heard we had a receiver, Bill,
That the road was in decline.
But, jam my air-valve, here's the worst!
An attachment on the line. (2nd prize, $25)
They often say that Love is blind,
and not apt to look behind;
But do not fear, dear reader, no,
They're posing for a picture show! (4th prize, $10)
