Pacific Ocean (Aug. 03, 2004) Aviation Structural Mechanic 2nd Class Jeremiah Hayes speaks with the pilot of an F/A-18C Hornet assigned to "Fist of the Fleet" of Strike Fighter Squadron Two Five (VFA-25) as he prepares the aircraft to launch from the flight deck aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). Stennis and Carrier Air Wing Fourteen (CVW-14) are at sea participating in a scheduled deployment and supporting Summer Pulse 2004 which is the deployment of seven carrier strike groups (CSGs), demonstrating the ability of the Navy to provide credible combat capability across the globe, in five theaters with other U.S., allied, and coalition military forces. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
