BELGRADE. Bl. Route. 521 extensive fortress stands (view). The arsenal contains Turkishweapons. In the Franciscan Church is the tomb of John Capi-stranus (d. 1465), preacher of a crusade against the Turks. OnAug. 5th, 1716, Prince Eugene defeated the Turks at Petervarad,thus avenging their violation of the Peace of Karlowitz. — Tunnel. 177x/o M. Karlocza (pron. Korlotso), German Karlowitz(260 ft.; Trompeter), a small town with 5600 inhab., 8 min. fromthe Danube, is memorable for the peace of Jan. 26th, 1699, bywhich Austria acquired the greater part of Hungary and Transyl-vania. The palace of the Servian-Oriental Patriarch stands in apleasant park. The chapel of Mariafried (665 ft.), in the vineyardsabove the town, occupies the site of the building in which the peacewas concluded. The red wine of Karlowitz and the Sliwowitz, orplum-brandy, distilled here, are highly esteemed. The convent of Krusedol, 6 M. to the S. of Karlocza, contains thetomb of Milan I. of Servia (d. 1901). 192Y2
