difficult problem was theshut in effect of the sohd concrete fire walls, some twelve feet high, which completelyenclose the garden and living side of thehouse. Extended vistas, so pleasing whenviewed from the living room or other van-tage points, are completely shut off. Skilland forethought have done much to elimi-nate this stuffy feeling by the introduc-tion of two elements which make the gar-den outstanding. John Stoll, one of the best known muralpainters in California, was employed todecorate the fire walls with pictorial muralsof San Francisco Bay scenes. He carefullytoned in his color work with the second out-standing element in the garden, a rusticredwood fence, supplied by the CaliforniaRustic Fence Co. of 646 Call Building, SanFrancisco. The soft reddishtones of the redwood bark, softened by thesilvery grey of moss and lichens, contrastsbeautifully with the foliage and flowers inthe foreground. But its more importantfunction is to lend distance to Mr. Stollsmurals. The public has received this effort ofOConnor Moffatt and Co., and those whoso generously assisted the architect, withfrank admiration. An average of five thou-sand guests daily are receiving suggestionsin home design and increasing their interestin home development problems by a studyof this interesting structure.
