Alexandre Antigna was a French painter who lived from 1817 to 1878. Antigna's paintings often featured muted colours and a sombre mood, reflecting the harsh realities of poverty and social inequality in 19th century France. Despite criticism from some contemporary art critics, Antigna's work has since been recognised for its powerful depiction of social issues and its influence on the Realist movement in art.
