PERSIAN GULF (Jul. 04, 2007) An F/A-18F Super Hornet, from the "Black Knights" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 154, launches from the flight deck of Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). Stennis and Carrier Air Wing 9 are on a scheduled deployment in support of the global war on terrorism and maritime operations. Maritime operations help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment, as well as complement counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
