In this group of states are made cloth, boots andshoes, hardware, firearms and other goods of various kinds. Massachusetts. Boston, the chief trade center ofNew England, has a population of more than half amillion. This city is the capital of Massachusetts. Fall River and Lowell manufacture more cotton cloththan any other two cities in America. Lawrence, a littlebelow Lowell on the Merrimac, takes high rank in bothwoolen and cotton goods. Cambridge is the seat of Harvard University. Lynn, Haverhill and Brockton lead in the manufactureof boots and shoes. Springfield has a United States armory, where rifles forthe army and navy are made. More paper is made in Holyoke than in any otherAmerican city. Maine. Boston owes itsgrowth very largelyto the fact that here the rail-roads from the west reach the chief harbor on the NewEngland coast. Among American cities, Boston rankssecond in foreign commerce. The mills and factories of New England use greatquantities of cotton, wool, leather and rubber. Part ofthis material comes through the port of Boston. This city distributes cloth anu leather goods made inthe mills and factories of this section. Shiploads of west-ern products — such as pork, cattle and beef — are sentfrom this port to Europe. Boston, like all other great cities in our country, hasextensive manufactures. The most valuable is clothing. There is a United States navy yard on Boston harbor. Among the cities of this state, Worcester ranks secondin size.
