Summary

This very fine Stereo Pairs image of a familiar building shows it in great detail and clarity in a way that we will probably never see it again? I love the windows in particular and the imposing majesty of the building. The first time I ever saw it back in the 1950's I thought it was a palace!..With thanks in particular today to sharon.corbet ( /photos/129555378@N07/ ) , beachcomberaustralia ( /photos/beachcomberaustralia/ ) , Niall McAuley ( /photos/gnmcauley/ ) , and Nl042 ( /photos/24700417@N04/ ) we have additional detail on this building - which is Sligo Townhall ( http://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=SL®no=32007030 ) . As it was opened in c.1872, and as we cannot see the nearby gatehouse which was built c.1876, the date range for this image (in a manner not always possible for STP images) has been refined to just a few years in the mid-1870s.......Photographers: Frederick Holland Mares, James Simonton..Contributor: John Fortune Lawrence..Collection: Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000034077 ) ..Date: Catalogue range c.1860-1883. But likely c.1872-1876..NLI Ref: STP_2411 ( vtls000565730 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
