Single sheet. Hand coloured engraving with original red ink on the sheet edge. A double hemisphere world map with two celestial hemispheres. The prime meridian and the conjunction of the hemispheres runs through Ferro. In the margins there are diagrams of: the eclipse of the sun and moon; the heavens and elements; a figure to prove the spherical roundness of the sea; personifications of the elements of earth, air, fire and water; and portraits of four navigators - Magellan, Drake, Cavendish and van der Noort. This is a sheet from John Speed's Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World, first published in 1627.
