The turbulent fellow kept no pupil for long ; butin their short stay they learnt from him to be Spaniards—his revelation set their art afire—and led them to supremefulfilment. For the greatest genius of Spain went as ayouth for a flitting while into Herreras studio, and his namewas to ring down the years as Velazquez. Antonio Saavedray Castillo and Alonso Cano also dwelt a short while withhis violences. CHAPTER XIV WHEREIN SPAIN FINDS HERSELF Thus Realism is awakening over Spain when 1600 strikes, WHEREINbeing thrashed into her pupils by Herrera in Seville, aroused SPAINin Toledo by El Grecos Venetian impressionism, taught in FINDSValencia by the Naturalist Ribalta. HERSELF Of Ribaltas pupils, the most famous was to be Ribera,and his art was to mean much to Spain. RIBERA 1588 - 1656 In the January of 1588 there was born to a worthycouple of Jativa, some twenty-five miles from Valencia, achild whom they christened Jusepe de Ribera. The father,being a man of respectable position, sent the lad to theUniversity of Valencia, to the pursuit of letters ; but thelittle fellows whole desire was to learn to paint. So hewas taken from the university and sent to the studio of theRealist Ribalta soon after the sixteen-hundreds began theircourse; and the lad began, with feverish delight, thatpassionate toil in the pursuit of his art which was to behis life until his mysterious grave took him.
