description

Summary

Above the design: 'The Times N° 1'. The Devil drags towards the flames of Hell (left) a child's go-cart or box on wheels 'Licensed To Carry Boroughmongers'. This is crammed with reckless Tories, dressed (where possible) as children, and encircled by the Devil's long barbed tail. They are (left to right) Wellington, with a sword against his shoulder, Wetherell holding up a firebrand (see BM Satires No. 16820, &c.), Cumberland, a bishop with bottle and glass, Croker (?), and Peel dressed as a policeman (see BM Satires No. 15768) and holding up a truncheon; behind them an 'Anti Reform Bill' projects from the cart. The bishop gives a toast: 'Here's our old friend'. The Devil, his trident under his arm, looks round with a grin to say 'Drink away and I'll give you a Devilish good TOAST'. Above the flames a gridiron is suspended; three naked figures look from the fire towards the cart, saying, 'Home Home Sweet Sweet Home!' The first (left) has the profile (caricatured) of Pitt. Behind is a bare mountain; on the sky-line are gibbets with dangling corpses. May 1832?
