f all these honors havesome conception of his human weakness ? Was it on that accountthat his forehead was clouded, his lips compressed ? The knightknew not, but he felt that here every movement, every look, mightfurnish an occasion for speedy death. The floor with the costlymarble begins to burn under his feet, and he notices with terror thatonly a few individuals approach the throne to greet the tyrant witha morning kiss. Yet there are only a few who are deemed worthy of this honor.The people call them the first friends of the emperor, and envythem greatly. So our young Roman previously has known nohigher aim in life than to be counted among this first class of thefriends (^^ amici), but to-day he can do very well without thathappiness ; the imperial kiss had no longer any charm for him.
