An old man (half-length) seated in a chair in profile to the right, holds up a spelling-book (inscribed 'ABC DEF, abc def') at which he scowls near-sightedly through spectacles; his left forefinger is raised admonishingly. He wears a night-cap and a dressing-gown over his coat. Cf. BMSat 8221. 3 December 1796
