Summary

Below the title: 'Losing the Reins'. Wellington and Peel, in the high driving seat of a vehicle which is shattered on a rock inscribed 'Public Opinion', are about to fall. Wellington has dropped reins and whip. He has been driving (right to left) a white horse and ass in double harness. Both are covered with fur-bordered gowns, that of the ass, the Mayor, marked with the City Arms and the letters 'D—K' [Don Key, see BM Satires No. 16303, &c.], that of the horse marked 'C.H.' [Claudius Hunter]. Wellington: 'We've lost our Seat Bob through this Ass of a Mayor [altered to Mare] & this Stupid Old Hunter'. Peel, clutching Wellington's collar and the back of the seat, says: 'I wish we'd had nothing to do with these Cits [altered to] Tits'. A policeman holding his truncheon watches them; he says 'I suppose we shall go next'. He stands facing the corner of 'Downing Street' (right). An opposite wall (left) is inscribed 'Parliament Street'. November 1830
