Summary
330-PSA-64-64 (USN 711451): U.S. Navy crewmen and scientists of the wintering-over party of Operation Deepfreeze have settled down on the Antarctic ice for their six month long winter’s night, and the last ships have left this month en-route to New Zealand and the United States. The icebreaker Atka (AGB 3), one of the last ships to leave, is shown in this dramatic twilight silhouette just prior to departing the Ross Sea area. No ships or airplanes will return to the cold, barren continent until the first rays of light illuminate Antarctica, sometime in October. Photograph released March 12, 1964. (2015/10/27).
