KEYPORT, Washington (May 15, 2019) The ex-USS Menhaden (SS 377) is seen here Mar. 11, 1983. Following its decommissioning from active service, it was painted yellow and used as a Trident program test target before being acquired in the early 1980s by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Keyport, known then as Naval Undersea Warfare Engineering Station (NUWES) in Keyport, Washington. Once at NUWES, it was fitted with two groups of white clusters buoys that suspended it at a per-determined test depth and it used for numerous acoustic tests. Menhaden was in commission from 1945 – 1971, and was used as a test unit from 1976 until its final scrapping in 1988. Photo catalog #NMNW.2013.025.016, and is courtesy of the Naval Undersea Museum.
