description

Summary

An attractive example of the U.S. Coast Survey's 1864 triangulation chart of the Texas coastline from Lamar and San Antonio Bay to Matagorda bay and Galveston Bay. Shows the primary triangulation points used in setting up the survey. Includes minimal inland information but does identify Lamar, Matagorda and Galveston as well as numerous shore points and light houses. An inset in the upper left hand quadrant details the mouth of the Rio Grande. Compiled under the direction of A. D. Bache, Superintendent of the Survey of the Coast of the United States and one of the most influential American cartographers of the 19th century.
