Painting in Austria flourished, and Franz Anton Maulbertsch (1724–1796) is arguably the greatest painter of the 18th century in central Europe. The vast majority of his brilliant fresco cycles are located in relatively inaccessible areas of Bohemia, Moravia, and northern Hungary.
