The climate of California, bothin tile coast cities and in the interior valleys, is well adapted to the develop-ment of a large gas business, especiallyfor cooking and heating; in addition towhich, the generally high retail pricesfor other fuels, such as coal and w^ood,encourage this development. For thesame reason, gas is being used in a con-stantly increasing degree for industrialpurposes. One consumer of this classalone uses more than 20,000,000 cubicfeet of gas per annum. The Company manufactures its gas ex-clusively from crude oil under a processdeveloped by its own staff. As is thecase in the steam-generation of electric-ity, oil is found easier as well as moreeconomical to handle than coal, besidesbeing cleaner and giving more satisfac-tory results.
