Lindahl was born in 1841 in Stockholm, Sweden. He became interested in photography at a young age and began his career as a photographer in the late 1860s. In the early 1870s he travelled to Norway to photograph the country's dramatic landscapes. Lindahl's photographs of Norway were some of the earliest and most influential images of the country's natural beauty. His work helped popularise Norway as a tourist destination and inspired many other photographers to follow in his footsteps. Lindahl's photographs were characterised by their dramatic compositions, use of light and shadow and attention to detail. He often used long exposures and special filters to capture the mood and atmosphere of the landscapes he photographed. In addition to his landscape photography, Lindahl also worked as a portrait photographer and ran a successful studio in Stockholm. He died in 1906, but his legacy as one of Sweden's most important photographers lives on.
