Pattern of tile design.; This beautiful double Jacquard coverlet features stylized floral medallions in a variation of the popular pattern Frenchman’s Fancy and a flower and vine border. The large flower corner block trademark was designed by John LaTourette. With double Jacquard coverlets, the fabric is joined together at the pattern, but can be pulled apart in other areas. The LaTourette family referred to double Jacquards as “division weaving.” The LaTourette family produced some of Indiana’s finest coverlets. Schuyler LaTourette recounts “Father was a weaver of all kinds of fabric from table linen to double coverlets. Mother did the coloring for our neighborhood…In the cabin which still stands Sister Sarah wove from morning till night; three looms were kept busy most of the time. I had to carry spools for my sister, who was such a fast weaver that she kept me very busy…”(Indianapolis News, November 1, 1916) When Sarah’s father, John, died in 1849, she carried on the family business along with her brother, Henry, until 1870. Sarah LaTourette was the only known professional female weaver in Indiana.
