Man Ray was an American visual artist born on 27 August 1890 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is best known for his contributions to the Dada and Surrealist movements, particularly in the fields of photography and filmmaking. Man Ray's early work was heavily influenced by the Cubist and Futurist movements, and he began experimenting with photography in the 1910s. He moved to Paris in 1921 and became associated with the Dadaists and Surrealists, working closely with artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Salvador Dalí and André Breton. Throughout his career, Man Ray experimented with a wide range of techniques and media, including painting, sculpture, collage and photograms. He is perhaps best known for his portraits of famous artists and intellectuals, including James Joyce, Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau. Man Ray died on 18 November 1976 in Paris, France. He is remembered today as one of the most innovative and influential artists of the 20th century.
