L. Birge Harrison was an American painter and teacher who lived from 1854 to 1929. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before travelling to Europe to continue his education. Harrison was strongly influenced by the Barbizon school of landscape painting, which emphasised the natural world and the effects of light on the landscape. Harrison returned to the United States in the 1880s and settled in New York City, where he became a prominent figure in the art world. He taught at the Art Students League of New York and was a founding member of the Ten American Painters, a group that sought to promote modernism in American art. Harrison's paintings often depicted rural landscapes and seascapes, and he was known for his use of muted colours and atmospheric effects. His work is characterised by a sense of tranquillity and contemplation, and he was particularly skilled at capturing the fleeting moments of light and shadow that define a landscape. In addition to his work as a painter, Harrison was also an influential teacher. He wrote several books on painting, including Landscape Painting: Modern Dutch Methods (1906) and The Luminous and the Grey (1919), which remain valuable resources for artists today.
