Soissons Cathedral—a view from near the chancel-rail down what was one of the most austerely beautiful naves in architecture. Here came the beast; here, in the summer of 1918, the artist painted the wreckage in the beast's trail, and the "Verboten" sign with which he warned his troops away from the towers.

And here, on this Easter morning, the sun lights up the Crucifixion window with new brilliancy, for the beast is gone forever.
