Although the potworks of Caughley, near Broseley, in Shropshire, were established as early as 1754, we know next to nothing oftheir productions until Thomas Turner had come from Worcester,in 1772, and had introduced a superior quality of porcelain and arich deep blue colour for under-glaze printing. Chinese subjectsare frequently found upon Caughley porcelain belonging to thisTurner period. Many of the finer and more highly decoratedpieces made at this time cannot be distinguished from the con-temporaneous or perhaps somewhat earlier productions of theWorcester works. For instance, in the Bond collection, sold at Fig. 46.—CAUGHLEY: SUGAR BASON AND COVER. Museum of Practical Geology.

MISCELLANEOUS PORCELAINS. 87 Leeds in October 1884, there was a very richly enamelled cup andsaucer, painted with flowers which would have done no discreditto the best potter and best artist of Worcester; it was, however, marked with the S of Caughley. It brought at the above sale no lessa price than seven guineas. On the same occasion four oval baskets, covers, and stands were sold, some marked with an S and otherswith a C : these would have been generally attributed to Worcesterif unmarked. They were of basket-work, with small four-petaledflowers at the intersections of the lattice, and they were furtherdecorated with raised blossoms, and touches of under-glaze blue.A similar piece is 3261 53 in the South Kensington Museum, but this bears the perplexing marks of a Y and an L, and isfreely, though rather roughly, decorated with enamel colours,It has not hitherto been assigned to any particular English factory. The marks used at Caughley from 1772 until 1799 were, webelieve, an S or a C
