'Vanguard', 'St Vincent' and a Royal Yacht at Spithead, 1850s RMG PW6090

description

Summary

'Vanguard', 'St Vincent' and a Royal Yacht at Spithead, 1850s

William Joy frequently collaborated on watercolours with his brother John. This example, however, appears to be all William's work and he achieves atmospheric effect with delicate blue tones. It is free from the strong greens that sometimes predominate in his work. The artists, who were natives of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, moved to Portsmouth in 1832 and were employed by the government to make drawings there during the 1830s.
