U.S. Naval Base, Pearl Harbor, Exterior Cranes, 50-Ton Portal Crane Type, Waterfront Crane Track System, Pearl City, Honolulu County, HI
Summary
Significance: Portal cranes at Pearl Harbor are intrinsically tied to the daily functions of the dry docks. Moreover, the design of the dry docks is governed by the functions, size, and maneuvering limits of the portal cranes. The portal crane design is resourceful in that the cranes are elevated upon the large bases that allow trains, locomotive cranes, and other vehicles to pass under and through them. The 50-ton crane type can hoist the largest hoist load of all the portal cranes.
