Thérèse Schwartze (1851–1918) was a Dutch portrait painter. Thérèse Schwartze was born on 20 December 1851 in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. She was the daughter of the painter Johan Georg Schwartze, who grew up in Philadelphia and trained in Düsseldorf. Schwartze received her first training from her father, before studying for a year at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten.

Wally Moes's career as a painter began with a study in the special women's class of the Amsterdam Academy, led by August Allebé. During a subsequent stay in Paris with friend and society portraitist Thérèse Schwartze, she became acquainted with the realistic work of Jean-Francois Millet, which made a great impression on her. In 1886 Moes settled in Laren, where she mainly painted the Gooise peasant population, in order to expose the poor living conditions of this population group.
