When Mr. Lincolnsterm at W^ashington was ended he went back toSpringfield and his law practice. He had meteastern men of great refinement and culture,and he felt his own lack of early training. Soagain he took up his studying, determined thathe would make himself the equal of the college-bred men.

The peoi^le of the North said thatthere should be no more slave states, while theSouth were determined to extend slavery. Thisquestion was discussed at all political meet-ings, and at last Lincoln felt that it was his dutyonce more to enter into a public life. He ranfor State Senator against Stephen A. Douglas.Meetings were held all over the state by thesemen. Douglas would make a speech and Lin-coln would follow him with another speech,answering him and asking such shrewd ques-tions that Douglas was often much embarrasedto answer them. These speeches were printed all over thecountry. Lincoln was defeated, but by thesegreat speeches he had become widely known allover the United States.
