According to the Alexander Turnbull Library, David Alexander De Maus. of South Devon, England; 1847-1925 arrived in New Zealand by the 'Caribou' in 1867 and set up a photography business in Port Chalmers. According to Harwicke Knight, Photography in New Zealand; a social and technical history, 1971, he was known to have been actively taking pictures between 1875 and 1899.
