TO GARUA VIA LAI 99 As we were loading the oxen on the opposite bank,we noticed that the sky in the West was as black asink, and thick white clouds, which we at first mistookfor smoke, were advancing towards us. We soonrealised that the approaching storm was driving beforeit great clouds of sand. When everything had beenmade secure, Schmidt and I put on our waterproofsand stood watching the advance of the storm throughour field-glasses. It came nearer and nearer, andat last we turned our backs to it, and were almostthrown to the ground as the tornado burst upon us,pelting us with sand, so that we could not open oureyes. In a few seconds nothing was to be seen butdriving, swirling sand. Every landmark had dis-appeared and conversation was impossible.
