and was defended onthat side by an earthen rampart and ditch ; on the opposite side wasa bawn 150 ft. long, 120 ft. broad in front of the house, surroundedby a wall 20 ft. high, with loops for musketry, and having itschemin de rond carried on arches ; square flankers stood at eachcorner.3 In the Cromwellian period it was held for the Parliamentby Colonel Mark Beresford, who, on 30th May, 1650, unsuccessfullyattempted to defend it against the Royalists under Bishop Mac-Mahon. The bishop gave the following account of the affair in hisreport to Ormonde : Wee resolved to march into the county of Derry to diverttheir (Coote & Venables) coniunction, and ariveing at a place calledDongevin, a considerable ffortte in the said county comaunded byLt.-colonell Beresforde, who was sumoned to deliver the possessiontherof to his Maties use, wch he utterly reiected, the coppies of my 1 Sampson, Memoir of Londonderry. 2 Irish Ecclesiastical Architecture, p. 102. 3 Masons Parochial Survey, i, 284.
