HS-3 group photograph, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71)

description

Summary

At sea aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt Aircrew members assigned to the "Tridents" of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Three (HS-3) are assembled for a group photograph in the squadrons ready room: (Left to Right) Cmdr. Howard Eliason, Strike Fighter Squadron 201s flight surgeon, Lt. John Smiley, pilot, Lt. Jason Young, pilot, Aviation Warfare Systems Operator 1st Class Rafael Garcia, and (Center) Aviation Warfare Systems Operator 2nd Class Aaron Albright, search-and-rescue swimmer. The crew was conducting its annual Naval Aviation Training and Operating Procedures Standardization (NATOPS) certification nearby, when they heard the call that the plane might be in trouble and turned its attention away from its training to the emerging situation. An F-14 Tomcat had gone down in the water and its aircrew had ejected safely. Both aircrew were rescued within minutes and brought back aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) for observations. Aircraft carriers are warships that act as airbases for carrier-based aircraft. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
