mmanding Officer was in pre-war daysassociated with the 14th Regiment (Princess of WalessOwn Rifles), of Kingston, Ontario. At the outbreak ofwar he was commanding the unit. General (then Lieut.-Colonel) Hughes was appointed to mobilize and commandthe 2ist Canadian Battalion in November, 1914, and con-tinued in such capacity until he assumed command ofthe loth Canadian Infantry Brigade, in France, on the14th of July, IQ16, and was promoted to the rank ofBrigadier-General. He saw service in the North-WestRebellion, wearing the riband of that campaign. He hasalso completed the period for the Long Service Decora-tion in the Canadian Active Militia. Previous to the warhe v/as Inspector of Penitentiaries. The name of General W. St. Pierre Hughes, the movingspirit in the Battalion for so many months, who directed• and fathered the unit from the days of its infancy,and whose character as a man and example as an officerbecame engrained into its life, will ever be associated withits history.

Photo) (Canadian War Records. (The Late) Lieutenant-Colonel Elmer Watson JonesD.S.O. (with bar). (THE LATE) LIEUT.-COLONEL ELMER WATSONJONES, D.S.O. (WITH Bar). Succeeded Brigadier-General W. St. P. Hughes in com-mand of the 2ist Canadian BattaUon. The unit of theCanadian Active Mihtia in which he served was the 41stRegiment (Rifles), of Brockville, Ontario. In 1907 hetransferred from his home Regiment to the Reserve ofOfficers, with the rank of Captain. When war broke outhe was practising law at Vancouver, B.C., but came East,applied for an appointment with the 21st Canadian Bat-talion, and became the first Officer Commandino: A Company. He was promoted to the rank of Major whilecommanding his company on the 9th of February, 1915,and was appointed Second-in-Command of the Battalionin France in January, 1916. His service with the 21st had been continuous except for a period of convalescencein England, from wounds received in the attack of VimyRidge on the 9th of April, 1917. During hi
