Summary
Willem Witsen (1860-1923) was a Dutch painter, photographer, and writer. He was a member of the Amsterdamse Joffers, a group of artists and intellectuals who were active in Amsterdam in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Witsen was known for his paintings of Amsterdam and his photographs of traditional Dutch life. He also wrote poetry and essays on art and culture. He was a member of the Tachtigers, a late 19th-century Dutch literary movement that was known for its opposition to contemporary social norms and its emphasis on individualism. He was also a member of the Amsterdam Impressionism movement. He died in 1923.
