'Crabs on Shore Rocks' by Shibata Zeshin, c. 1873-91, Honolulu Museum of Art, 4587.1
Summary
Crabs on Shore Rocks by Shibata Zeshin, c. 1873-91, ink and color on silk, 12.5 x 16.25 in., Honolulu Museum of Art, accession 4587.1
In Japan Shibata Zeshin (1807–1891) is known as too modern, pandering to the Westernization movement, as well as an overly conservative traditionalist who did nothing to stand out among his contemporaries. Despite his dubious reputation in Japan, Zeshin became well known and widely studied in the Western art world, particularly in England and the United States.
