A family whose history has been a stormy one and the father shot for refusing to collect loot. The family was living in Lille when it was sacked in October 1914. The older girl on the right was arrested for giving chocolate to French prisoners and was locked up for two weeks. Finally her mother had to buy her release from the German Commandant by selling her wedding ring and all the family treasures. This money went either to the German government or to the Commandant. The case is typical of a large member of arrests made about that time. Another daughter twenty years old was taken away by the German Commandant and has never been seen since. The family was rapatrie through Evian. They were brutally treated on the way and had to sleep in the open fields for 19 days with hardly any food. They are sheltered by the A.R.C. in the comfortable home shown in the picture. They have been given furniture and the older children have secured employment through the A.R.C. Two sons are in the French Army

How news of peace was received at a German prisoner camp in England. The prisoners gathered around the gate of the camp and looked over toward the American base hopital a few hundred yards away, where a great parade and celebration was being organized. The Germans were just as pleased as the Americans at the news, and soon had their own celebration under way, no less noisy and hilarious than that of the Americans. "Everybody's happy," remarked an American passing down the road. "Everybody's happy, even the Fritzies!" In the center of the group at the gate is the German sergeant-major, who is formerly in business in America

American Red Cross in North Russia. The largest building in Archangel is the great prison, belonging to the old regime, when prisons were a very vital and important matter in the business of government. It was emptied by the Bolsheviks when they arrived in Archangel, and it is now again filled with Bolsheviks, being used as a barracks for American troops. It was built by the Swedes during their occupation of this part ofhte coast a hundred and fifty years ago. The walls are nine to fifteen feet thick, which is remarkable in a two-story structure, and the windows are barred with irons two inches in diameter, while the doors are all solid iron. Architecturally it is not all so good as the part shown in this picture, which is the court side of the main entrance. The tallest man in the group is the American Assistant Provost Marshal, Lieut. Wron of Detroit, who was in charge of the prison Next to him is Lieut. E.W. Hallowell of Los Angeles, American Red Cross, then the old Russian chief of the prison and his assistant

After the Bulgarians and Austrians were driven from the hills around Monastir, the A.R.C. established ist first civilian hospital in this old Turkish school building. It had the roof, windows and doors shot out by shell-fire and the floors ripped up for the soldiers. But the Americans repaired it with the help of some prisoners of war and is now caring for seventy five people within its walls. The cases are mostly typhus and civilians, wounded by shells and bombs accidentally exploded in the nearby fields. In the background is a Turkish watch-tower, built and used by the Ottomans during their regime over this country to keep a constant eye on the town and surrounding country
