New Chief of Naval Aeronautics takes oath. Washington, D.C., June 1. The newly appointed Chief of Bureau of Aeronautics, U.S. Navy, Capt. John H. Towers, right, being administered the oath of office today by John B. May, Chief Clerk of the Navy Department. The promotion automatically carries with it the rank of Rear Admiral for the new chief, Capt. Towers was one of the pilots of the NC 4 on the massed flight across the Atlantic in 1919

Heroes of Nicaraguan service receive decorations from Secretary of Navy. Seven officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps were presented with decorations for distinguished service in Nicaragua by Secretary of the Navy Charles Francis Adams today at the Navy Department. In this picture Secretary Adams is pinning the Distinguished Medal on Rear Admiral David Sellers, Judge Advocate General of the Navy, who was commander of the Special Service in Nicaragua from July 1927 to May 1929. Senator Allen Ellender, of Louisiana, recently received complaints that a pretty face means more to some of the Bureau Chiefs when time comes for a promotion in Government Service, so, the Senator asked for an appropriation to pursue an investigation of these allegations. First woman congress member protests increase in nation's armed forces. Washington, D.C., Feb. 7. Jeanette Rankin, first woman member of Congress, told the Naval Affairs Committee for the House today that there is 'much technical opinion within the Navy Department against the fortification of Guam as there is for it', and that the reason that the committee had not heard such opinions is because, 'announcements of policy come only from the top.' Miss Rankin voted against U.S. entrance into the World War, 2-7- 39
