San Francisco, Calif., July 24, 2013 -- FEMA and Bay Area interns contend in a "Cook-Off" to promote September's National Preparedness month. In the event of an emergency, standard amenities, such as grocery stores and restaurants, may not be readily available. The cook-off serves as a model to show the types of meals that can be created in the absence of electricity and gas. This exercise highlights the step of "get a kit," which includes stocking your home with extra non-perishable foods and a can opener

One of the most impressive scenes witnessed at any of the training camps where men of the National Army are being whipped into shape was enacted at Camp Upton, N.Y. when 300 foreign born members wearing the uniform were admitted to full citizenship. These men were granted full citizenship in order to give them every protection accorded a citizen of the United States.
