Nowadays, Lucien and Yvette Grodidier live at the Colony Nancienne in the old Chateau at Caen. There they can go to school without interruptions; they can play out of doors safely; they are not even waked up anymore by air raids, nor do they have to live half their lives in cellars. Best of all they are "Stars and Stripes Children" with a whole company of American God-fathers to be good to them. Yvette is to have a doll. The last one she had was broken in 1914 when a Boche officer kicked it while she was playing with it in the street of the little town that was a pleasant home till the war brought the Germans and the terror. It is Company L of the 161st U.S. Infantry to whom Yvette writes: "It is my sole wish to make acquaintance with the good people who help us and give them a hearty shake-hand." The biggest crop on the farm this year has been potatoes, and the convalescent patients have enjoyed getting these into the hospital cellars for use this winter. Albanian farmers learn the American way. With this kind of age old farm equipment still generally in use it is easy to picture the amazement of Albanian farmers when they saw a demonstration of modern American methods. It was arranged for their benefit by the American Red Cross, now carrying on an estensive relief work for the war sufferers of the much fought over Balkan state. Tilling the fields with oxen hitched to a rude, home-made, wooden plow is slow, hot work and discouraging, as well, for the men who have to build up a country that is having its first taste of economic and governmental freedom after centuries of Turkish control and outside interference. It is believed that Albania, although centuries behind the timewill grasp at all the newest and quickest means to restore herself and solidfy her independenice for her people follow agricultural pursuits naturally and the soil is fertile and favorable for almost any kind of crops. There are 40,000 Albanians in the United States who are giving their hearty support to the efforts of their war hammered country

This scarecrow better clothed than the peasant. A member of the American Red Cross commission to western Russia and the Baltic states photographed this scarecrow on a farm in Latvia, just over the Lettish-Bolsheviki border. Passing by the next day he noticed that only the sticks of the scarecrow were there; that the long, ragged coat and the noth-eaten sic hat had disappeared. The farmer said that he had given them to a refugee who had just crossed through the Bolsheviki-Lettish front from Soviet Russia the night before. When refugees had changed clothing with the scarecrow there were not enough garments to cover the scarecrow

A Product of the 4 H. Club. Gradie Walton, 17 yrs. old, - is very deficient in most school branches (except in mathematics where he shines). He is much handicapped physically, - lost one eye in an accident and the other is weak. This year he raised 135 bushels of corn on one acre (his father raised about one half as much and complained that the boy's land was better). The secret was that the boy worked hard on the plot, - fertilizing and cultivating, even bringing soil in from the woods. He got the First Prize for two years.
