Loans to railroads have my approval--Jesse Jones. Washington, D.C., July 14. Federal Loan Administrator Jesse Jones today told the Senate Banking and Currency Committee that he approved as 'highly desirable' loans to railroads to permit refinancing of their securities with lower interest rates. The loans should be made, Jones said, only if the railroads give bondholders preferred stock equivalent to the difference between the par value of the bonds and the price at which the securities were purchased

Dies asked, 'Why did you want that information?' 'For the same reason that I would like to have any factual information,' he replied. 'What difference did it make?' McWhirter leaned back. Implicates industry for part of blame for sit-down strikes. Washington, D.C., March 20. Senator James E. Murray (left) of Montana, declared today that industry is part to blame for sit-down strikes. Murray veiled a reference to the Supreme Court when he said, "this is the only powerful nation in the world where the government is powerless to settle a controversy of the sort now going on in Detroit; powerless to investigate and resolve the difference between the contending forces." Senator Murray is shown with Senator Henry F. Ashurst, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, 3/20/1937

25 cents, costs of producing gallon of whisky, Monopoly Committee told. Washington, D.C., March 16. The Monopoly Committee was told today by James E Friel, Vice President and Treasurer of Joseph E. Seagram and Sons, Inc., that the cost of producing [a] gallon of Kentucky Bourbon Whisky was between 25 and 30 cents. In Illinois, Friel added, the cost would be five cents less because of the difference in state levies. He asserted that while prices of liquor have dropped since the early days of Repeal, the lower prices have not materially affected consumption, 3-16-39

Senate battlers on Pure Politics Act. Washington, D.C., Mar 7. At odds on the Senate floor since the inception of The Hatch Act, but good personal friends are Senators Carol Hatch, D. of New Mexico, author of The Act to Purify Politics, and Senator Sherman Minton, Dem., of Indiana. Latest difference to develop was yesterday when Sen. Miller or Arkansas offered an amendment to draw the teeth from the act be allowing federal employes to 'voluntarily' take part in politics. The amendment was intended to be tacked on to a bill to extend the scope of the act to U.S. paid state and city employees. The Indiana senator, Democratic whip on the floor, acted as floor leader for The Miller Amendment, but the bill was defeated by three votes. Today, the two are as good friends as ever, 3-7-40

Bantam, Connecticut. Much of the food that is served in Bantam homes is bought at the local First National Store, part of New England's leading food chain. Manager Charley Dempsey, who admits that he sometimes takes off his hat when sleeping, hopes soon to get a larger store with a full line of meats, but is worried about the difficulty in getting meat cases. He's very pleased about the increase in his business, which has meant larger weekly checks for him, and has increased his staff from one boy part-time two years ago to three full-time and one part-time now. He looks for an even greater volume when the second forty units of the new housing project are completed. Charley, who was in the Army during the last war, and all his employees are natives of Bantam. The main difference rising food prices have meant to Bantam housewives, says Dempsey, is that whereas they used to order without bothering to ask the price, they now ask the price, then say what they want
