Capitol 'attic' yields records of early American Congresses. Washington, D.C., Jan. 23. Historical records dating back to early American Congresses have just been found during a house-cleaning of the attics and basement of the house wing at the Capitol. 1. Above is the original House Bill written in longhand, which declared that a state of war existed between the United States and Great Britain and dependencies. Signed by Patrick Magruder, then Clerk of the House, the Bill was delivered to the Senate and returned in the form of a 'Confidential Bill' in which a change was made to read 'the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the dependencies thereof.' The first and finished draft were believed to have been lost when the Capitol was burned in 1814, 1/23/39

Mr. and Mrs. C. Farnsworth live in a trailer which they bought about three months ago. He works at the Bath Iron Works. They originally come from Boston and lived in the town of Bath until they found the rents too much for them to meet. In Bath they had rented two small rooms in an attic for six dollars a week (unheated). When their rent was raised they decided to move into a trailer. Their trailer is next to a gas station from which they get their electricity, water and toilet facilities for one dollar fifty cents a week. They do not expect to move into a house but want to continue living in trailers so as to save their money "while the BOOM lasts."

Air raid protection--what to do in your home. If your attic looks like this, it constitutes a fire hazard, air raid or not. What would happen if you tossed a match into it, let alone an incendiary? Defense housing, Erie, Pennsylvania. Living conditions were so crowded in Erie, Pennsylvania, that a defense worker and his family of three were found to be living in this attic room. One of the defense industries there, which holds large contracts for the Navy, expects an increase of 4,000 workers during the coming year. Practically all vacancies are already taken, and even the contemplated construction of new homes will fill only a fraction of the need. Realizing the urgency of this need, the Division of Defense Housing has programmed 300 homes in this area, 60 of which are already completed (July 1941). In the meantime, trailers are being used by the Division as a temporary expedient until the more permanent homes are completed

Salvage. School children get in the scrap. The school children of America were officially organized for a nationwide salvage program starting on Monday, October 5, 1942. The children are going into the field as a junior army engaged in a major campaign for victory. Plans included the laying out of definite areas in each community to be assigned to specific groups of children. Plans were also made for holding meetings, collecting scrap, storing it and getting it to central points for shipment. Roanoke, Virginia has already gotten its program underway. This picture shows scrap being dug out of an attic by the "junior commandos"
